Alia Bhatt's spy film Alpha has had two lives: a theatrical run that fell just short of Rs 100 crore, and a streaming run that did far better. With Love & War on the way in January, here is where things stand.

The theatrical run

Alpha, from Yash Raj Films' spy universe, stars Alia Bhatt, Sharvari, Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol and was released worldwide on July 3, 2026, according to Yash Raj Films. Sacnilk reports it grossed about Rs 99.1 crore worldwide, roughly Rs 70 crore in India and Rs 29 crore overseas, missing the Rs 100 crore milestone.

The streaming run

The Times of India reports that Alpha began streaming on Netflix on Aug. 28. Sacnilk says it reached No. 1 on Netflix India and No. 3 globally among non-English films in its first week, and CineCorner UK reports 3.3 million views and 7.7 million hours watched. CineCorner also cites a 22 percent Rotten Tomatoes score for the film. Critic scores and audience numbers measure different things, and a film can do well on streaming while reviews stay cool.

What is next for Alia

Her next release is Love & War, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and co-starring Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal. ABP News reports it is set for a Jan. 21, 2027 theatrical release and that its theatrical rights were reportedly sold for Rs 300 crore, a figure the outlet attributes to a report. NDTV reports that Alia Bhatt and Bhansali are in talks to revive Inshallah after Love & War, again attributed to a report.

The week around her

Ranbir Kapoor, her Love & War co-star, has the Ramayana trailer out and the film due on Nov. 5 per India Today. Vicky Kaushal was in London with Katrina Kaif earlier this month. The Love & War cast is therefore in the news from three directions at once, though none of that news is about the film itself.

Why the two numbers differ

Theatrical grosses count tickets sold, while streaming charts count views and hours. A film that audiences skip in cinemas can still find a large home audience, particularly one with stars like Alia Bhatt and Anil Kapoor. Netflix charts also rank by views in a given week, so a strong first week does not say how long a title will keep drawing viewers. Neither number settles whether Alpha was a success, and the studio has not published a combined view.

A simple scorecard

Theatrical: about Rs 99.1 crore worldwide per Sacnilk. Streaming: No. 1 in India, No. 3 globally among non-English films in week one. Critics: 22 percent on Rotten Tomatoes per CineCorner. Next: Love & War on Jan. 21, 2027, per ABP News.

What we could not confirm

We could not confirm the worldwide gross from the studio, since YRF has not published it in what we found. We could not confirm the Rs 300 crore rights deal or the Inshallah talks, which are both reports. We could not confirm the Netflix view numbers from Netflix itself, and CineCorner is a third-party source. We read search summaries for several of these pages and not the full articles.
