Tiger Shroff escaped without a gunshot wound after shots were fired at his car in Mumbai's Juhu area on Sunday evening, Oct. 18. His driver and an autorickshaw driver were hurt. Here is what police, ministers and outlets have said so far, and where the accounts still differ.

What happened near the park

The Hindu reports that the incident took place at about 7 p.m. as the actor was leaving after work, citing Deputy Commissioner of Police Mohit Garg. The Hindustan Times places it near Pushpa Park in Juhu, close to the Jamnabai Narsee School, and says Shroff was returning after playing football at a club. According to the HT, an eyewitness told police he was about to get into his BMW when the firing began.

Videos circulating on social media, as described by the HT, show three men on one motorcycle. Two of them got off, fired at least five rounds at the car and fled on the bike. The Indian Express also reports five rounds, citing police, and says the spot is barely 100 metres from the Juhu police station.

India Today says the actor, who is 36, shifted towards the driver's seat after the shooting. Police suspect the attackers knew his routine, The Indian Express reports, because he plays football at the park every Sunday for about two hours.

Who was hurt

Speaking to ANI, as quoted by Times Now, DCP Garg said Shroff did not sustain any gunshot injuries and was completely safe. He said the driver had a hand injury and was out of danger, and that a second man was being treated.

The HT reports that the driver was hit in the left hand and was admitted to Nanavati Hospital, where hospital sources said he might need surgery. The actor was checked at the same hospital and discharged, the paper says. An autorickshaw driver with a gunshot wound to the chest was taken to Cooper Hospital, where doctors described his condition as stable.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who met the actor at his home, said Shroff had suffered gunpowder burns to his right hand, India Today reports. NDTV Profit adds that Shinde also mentioned injuries from glass shards, and that the first photographs after the incident show bandages on the actor's right arm and dressings on his shoulder and chest.

The investigation

Times Now reports that Juhu police have registered a case against three unidentified people under Sections 109(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and under the Arms Act. Police have formed 15 teams, according to the HT, The Indian Express and India Today.

India Today says the first image of the suspects shows two men in white shirts, one wearing a black cap, and that police have seized the motorcycle, which was left at Andheri railway station. Preliminary findings suggest the bike is registered in Mumbai, the channel adds. The Indian Express says the case is likely to be moved to the Mumbai Police Crime Branch.

Reports on detentions do not agree. The Hindu and the HT say one person was detained, the HT adding that he was picked up in Santacruz. Times Now says two people have been detained. The Indian Express, in a report updated at 1:43 a.m. on Monday, says no one had been detained by then. Police have not named anyone.

The gang claim

The HT reports that two alleged operatives of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, Anil Pandit and Harman Sandhu, claimed responsibility in social media posts. The message warned that anyone in the Mumbai film industry who works with Salman Khan would be next, according to the paper's translation.

The claim has not been verified. The Indian Express says police are yet to establish its authenticity, and The Hindu reports that DCP Garg declined to comment on it. The HT notes that Shroff and Khan have not starred together in a full-length feature film, and that no such film is in production. The Indian Express says there was no complaint on record from Shroff about earlier threat calls.

Ministers and the industry react

The Hindu reports that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti and asked for a swift probe. Shinde told the HT that he had spoken to the actor and assured him that the government stood firmly with him.

Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit told The Hindu that the firing at Rohit Shetty's bungalow earlier this year took place only two lanes away. "We all stand by the Shroff family. We pray that his driver makes a safe recovery," he said. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees condemned the attack and sought security for the actor and his family, the Times of India and NDTV Profit report. The All Indian Cine Workers Association also questioned law and order in the city, according to the Times of India.

Closer to home, the Times of India reports that Jackie Shroff's team said "Tiger is okay", and that Disha Patani visited the actor's residence after the incident.

Why it matters, and what is unconfirmed

The HT lists earlier incidents allegedly linked to the same gang: shots fired at Salman Khan's Bandra home on April 14, 2024, the firing outside Rohit Shetty's Juhu home on Feb. 1 this year, and the killing of politician Baba Siddique on Oct. 12, 2024. Opposition leaders quoted by the HT have blamed the state government, while ministers have promised strict action.

We could not confirm how many people are in custody, the identities of those detained, or the motive. Outlets spell the driver's name differently, so we have not used it. Accounts of what the actor was doing before the incident also vary slightly. The gang's claim remains unverified by police, and we have not treated it as fact.
